Xbox may be dead, but console gaming is still alive and well, analysts say

Microsoft is reportedly developing the next generation of Xbox, but the prospects don't look promising. However, one prominent video game analyst says the Xbox's decline doesn't mean the console is dead.

Rhys Elliott Alinea Insights Communications shared the estimated sales of PlayStation 5 games in October 2025, and the two major winners are Battlefield 6, EA Sports FC 26and The Ghost of Mount Yoteisales were 3.2 million, 3 million and 2.7 million respectively. The trio have sold nearly 9 million copies combined, with Elliott commenting: “AAA games, live services and single-player games, etc., are still thriving on consoles. The 'CoNsOlE is DeAd' narrative is getting increasingly annoying. The Xbox as a console is dying, yes. But let's not extrapolate too far, shall we?”

Releasing Xbox games on PlayStation 5 has paid dividends for Microsoft. Several previous Microsoft exclusive games Dominate the PlayStation sales charts earlier this year.

This is thanks in part to the constant stream of new content coming out of Minecraft expansion packs and GTA Online. Additionally, EA Sports holds three of the top 10 spots between FC 26, FC 25, and Madden NFL 26. Take-Two’s “NBA 2K26” ranked fifth with 564,000 copies sold in the month.
