Which starter weapon should you choose in Moonlighter 2?

Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault You are asked to choose from four weapon options at the start of a new game. These are just the basic versions of the four weapon types, but you'll be using whichever weapon you choose over multiple runs before you unlock another, so you'll want to consider that option. In this guide, we'll break down which weapon is the best in Moonlighter 2 so you don't get stuck on the wrong side for too long.

Merchant's Sword

The sword is considered a balanced weapon, with its main attack providing a four-hit attack pattern, with the final strike acting as a finisher. His special move is a spinning attack that causes damage around Will. If you use your special skill after three attacks, it turns into a more powerful finisher.

Merchant's Great Sword

The attack method of the great sword is slow, but it also has the strongest attack. The main attack uses a three-hit pattern, using sharpness for each attack. Your special skill is a quick stabbing attack, which is weak but restores sharpness. The sharpness meter is split into chunks, and with each missing chunk, you do less damage.

Merchant's Spear

Spears provide ranged attacks, but have limited attack range. Using the primary attack will yield spearheads, and the fourth attack will drop three spearheads. Using the spear's special ability, you can recall the spearhead back to you, damaging enemies in its path.

The Gauntlet provides the fastest attack speed of the four weapon types. The main attack doesn't deal a lot of damage, but does generate a special meter. The special attack is slow and deals a lot of damage, and when your meter is full it activates Rage, which increases your attack speed and knockback.

Which weapon should you choose?

While much of the decision comes down to personal preference, I found the greatsword to be the best early game in Moonlighter 2. The attack speed reduction isn't too much of a hindrance, and the stronger attacks are worth it. Plus, you still have access to your gun, which can be used if you swing your sword for too long. You can unlock the rest of the base weapons by getting materials from monsters in Kalina (the first area you can visit).
