Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick teases a bright future for the Mafia franchise following this year's prequel, Mafia:Old Country“Performed far beyond expectations.”
Speaking to IGN ahead of Take-Two's second-quarter financial report, Zelnick discussed the future of 2K Games' long-running open-world crime series (The latest GTA 6 is delayed). As developer Hangar 13 prepares to release new content and updates following the launch of The Old Country in August, Take-Two bosses have teased that fans may eventually have more Mafia to look forward to.
“Absolutely,” Zelnick said when asked if Old Country's performance was enough to instill confidence in continuing to run the franchise. “We're really excited about Mafia, and I think that's a good question because it's kind of like a reset for the series. Take-Two didn't provide exact sales figures, but said Mafia in Early 1900s Sicily “quickly exceeded our internal expectations and confirmed our belief that consumer demand for premium, narrative-driven experiences that exceed value remains strong.” While it's unclear when or how another Mafia game will materialize in the future, more new content and updates for The Old Country are confirmed to be in development.
Mafia: Homeland, launched in August, is a prequel to the crime drama video game series that debuted in 2002 with the original Mafia. The series was released semi-regularly until the controversial Mafia 3 in 2016, which featured just one set The critically acclaimed remastered version of the Definitive Edition In 2020, the arrival of this new work will break people's wait for more new works. After nearly a decade of waiting for a new title, it looks like fans won't have to wait that long anymore.
Hangar 13 and 2K gave The Old Realm a fresh start with Mafia, which released earlier this year, and that plan seems to be paying off. We call it “great” 8/10 Review. At the time of release, we said: “Mafia: The Old Country is a traditional but effective return to the linear and tightly story-driven format of the original Mafia and Mafia II, and it has an excellent eye and ear for detail.”
