Tim Schafer of Double Fine now excludes more sequels, so you can forget about BrütalLegend 2 and Psychonauts 3

Double Fine is ready to release a brand new game called Goalkeeper In October, but what happens after that? According to development head Tim Schafer, he is working on multiple projects at a Microsoft-owned studio, none of which are sequels.
The goalkeeper is an atmospheric puzzle adventure in which people awaken a long-standing beacon and continue their journey. It was led by Lee Petty of Double Fine, which means Tim Schafer can let go and be free to do other things.
What are these other things? Schafer talked to IGN on Gamescom 2025 and certainly won't reveal Double Fine's upcoming game, but does say the studio has multiple projects, all of which are original IPs.
“I'm working on other things,” he confirmed. “The studio is working on multiple projects now, and they are all original IPs because we did Psychonauts 2, which will keep us going for a while.”
So, at least in the short to mid-term, this ruled out psychiatry 3 or – this is always Brütal Legend 2. As game developers like to say, never say never say it, but Schafer's clear comments give us an idea of what to expect from a double fine in the coming years – which is unexpected.

Psychonauts 2 is the first release of Double Fine after Microsoft acquired the company in 2019. Schafer previously talked about having to cut down on game bosses due to budget issuesbut Microsoft's buyout means it has resources to add them back. Schafer describes the goalkeeper as a small size but impressive quality compared to the Psychonauts 2.
Psychonauts 2 is finally released in 2021. Now, four years later, Double Fine is about to release its next game. The Guardian was released on October 17, 2025 on PC and Xbox Series X and S.
