This pumpkin-carving MMO is only playable for a few weeks a year, but it's back

If you've been wandering around a field hoping for a giant pumpkin to appear, you're in for a long wait. The only spooky pumpkin coming your way this year is Ghost Town Pumpkin Festival, a pumpkin-carving massively multiplayer online game that's back online after a hiatus

Created by Whippoorwill Ltd (aka Adam R. and Dawn B.), Ghost Town Pumpkin Festival takes players into a literal ghost town where they can participate in the in-game Halloween festival and pumpkin carving competition. Players can win prize ribbons from other players who award prizes for their favorite pumpkins. The game also encourages players to wander around the town and customize their ghostly avatar.

Previously, the Ghost Town Pumpkin Festival was limited to 200 players at a time. This year, the game adds support for 800 simultaneous players. There are also new areas to explore, including a ghost town movie theater showing classic silent films. Some other activities in town include haunted explorations and hayrides.

Players can set their own price, but if they choose to pay $2 or more, they'll get a version of the game that includes a ghost hat. Adam R. said the game has set a record this year with players creating 24,000 pumpkins since its return earlier this month.

The team behind the game also said that the Ghost Town Pumpkin Festival will be canceled a week or two after Halloween, presumably before its inevitable return in 2026.
