Few RPG scenarios are as engaging or enduring as classic dungeon crawling. Ever since video games have been able to simulate the experience of pen and paper, there have been endless dark mazes waiting for players to explore, filled with loot and danger.
Distros centered around large dungeons, e.g. Diablo 4, Etrian Odyssey Origin Seriesand ruins 2 Launching over the past few months, this feels like the perfect time to round up a list of our favorite dungeon crawlers.
Dungeon crawlers come in many forms, and this list has them all – loot-driven hack-and-slash games, old-school first-person role-playing games, grid-based rogue-likes, and more. Speaking of dungeon crawlers, you'll notice we use some niche terms like “blobber” (referring to a first-person role-playing game in which you control a group of characters moving together in a “blob”) and “DRPG” (short for “dungeon RPG,” which fans often use to distinguish hardcore dungeon crawlers like Etrian Odyssey or Labyrinth of Refrain) from CRPGs or JRPGs. That said, we obviously can't include every game that fits the description of “dungeon crawler,” so be sure to drop your suggestions in the comments!
