The 1988 hardcover box is one of the most popular modern editions of The Lord of the Rings, and it offers the most economical way to get the version through the cover and box art of Alan Lee’s illustrations. Alan Lee's Middle Earth landscape paintings and Middle Earth maps are widely regarded as the best artists who have worked in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and The Hobbit.
The box set has wraparound art on the slide box, matching the cover of the ring fellowship, the two towers and the return of the king. Each cover resembles a painting, as the full-color illustrations have ornate frames with detailed patterns. These versions also come with a map of the Middle Land from the third century. Each book ends with a portion of the appendix, filled with fascinating reference material and background information.
The pastel palette combines with classic fonts and faded yellow dust jackets to make these versions look appropriately vintage. Even after 45 years, though, these versions are one of the most beautiful versions you can buy today. These hardcover versions are not surprising, and the box set is still in print. In all three volumes, the 1988 LOTR was 1,214 pages.

Amazon's early sale also brought about last year's deal Budget-friendly Lord of the Rings Collection Hardcover. These versions are similar in size to the 1988 version, but they have a more modern look with colored edges, foil cover art, maps on interior covers and feature bookmarks. A matching version of the Hobbit and Silmarillion has also been published.
All five $35 hardcover versions are sold for $15 or less. Hobbit only $11.33and Silmarillion is only $12.26. There is a box with three books from The Lord of the Rings, but it is currently cheaper to buy each book separately.
