Publisher jokes, concerns and memes aplenty – the internet reacts to GTA 6 delays
Blog Andrew Joseph 08 Nov , 2025 0

GTA 6 delayed againthis time from May to November 2026. Maybe we should have seen it coming. After all, aren't all Rockstar games delayed multiple times before finally launching and breaking sales records?
We've had extensive coverage of the delays, including Comments from Take-Two owner Strauss Zelnickhe told IGN in an interview that he's “very confident” in the new release date (I'm sure he's said this before?). And, if you need a reminder, here it is 89 details in GTA 6 Trailer 2.
But how is the internet reacting to GTA 6's delay? As you might expect, fans are in tatters. Also spare a thought for PC gamers, who now face the prospect of having to wait until 2027 at the earliest to play GTA 6. But video game publishers, at least publicly, have some interested, while others are wary of any game that might be earmarked for a fall 2026 release window. Then there are the memes. Lots of memes.
Let's start with Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt, which took the opportunity to remind everyone that it had promised Cyberpunk 2077 would not be delayed again and see how its sci-fi action RPG plays out when it launches in December 2020. What CDPR is saying here is trust Rockstar to deliver – it's better to delay a game and make sure it's great than to launch it when it's not ready.

Meanwhile, Hotline Miami and Cult of the Lamb publisher Devolver Digital continues to promise (threaten?) to release a game on the same day as Grand Theft Auto 6. Now, it has moved any game it wants to GTA 6's new release date: November 19, 2026. Devolver won't (yet can't) stop. It even had the audacity to ask Rockstar if it needed help getting GTA 6 out, tweeting: “Do you need a publisher to get this thing back on track? DMs are open. Our work at @BALLxPIT speaks for itself.” Those liars!
You can't escape us.

On a more serious note, Christofer Sundberg, founder of Liquid Swords and former boss of Just Cause developer Avalanche, called delay “Gravity shifts,” he continued. “When the giant moves, the ground shakes. It's not competition, it's opportunity.”
This is a comment on how publishers will be scrambling to adjust their release dates after Grand Theft Auto 6 was moved from May to November. Some might release it around May, but now GTA 6 is out of that window. Other conferences that have already locked in fall 2026 dates may now be preparing for crisis talks. For example, will next year's Call of Duty be good? COD usually launches in November, so we could be getting a GTA 6 vs. Call of Duty showdown in 2026. I know where my money is going.
But the delay could even affect games scheduled to launch in 2027. John “Bucky” Buckley, communications director and publishing manager at Palworld developer Pocketpair, Bring to X/Twitter If “a lot of games (especially AAA games) are expected to avoid the 2027 awards season,” now that “GTA 6” is scheduled to be released on November 19th, this puts Rockstar's game out of the 2026 nomination window for most game awards. “On purpose or…?🤔” Bucky wondered.
Microsoft is probably the publisher hardest hit by GTA 6 delays.
Halo Remastered, Gears of War E-Day, Fable, and Call of Duty 2026 are almost certainly scheduled to launch next fall. Maaaaaybe Forza Horizon 6 too? Best shipped before November 19th! https://t.co/UWp6h1aMO1

Then there are the memes. So many memes! Of course, there's too much to cover in one article, but I'd like to highlight a BBC Sports Live reporter who broke the news about Grand Theft Auto 6's delay while covering a round of football last night.

Even Guinness World Records has taken action.
The current record for the longest development cycle for a video game? 14 years and 43 days.
Officially announced by developer 3D Realms on April 28, 1997, the first-person shooter Duke Nukem Forever was finally released on June 10, 2011. https://t.co/8XBZGM3i98
