Pillars of Eternity turn-based beta mode launching this week

In 2015, Obsidian Entertainment launched Pillars of Eternity, a real-time, team-based tactical role-playing game. Now, Obsidian is making one of the biggest changes to the game in the past 10 years, introducing a turn-based mode. Pillars of Eternity players can get their hands on it this week.

Real-time combat is inspired by the system used in the game's sequel, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deathfire. The studio also released an announcement trailer for the new mode, showing it in action.
According to Obsidian, the following real-time improvements were made after listening to feedback from Deadfire fans.
- free turn: All turns are now affected by the character's overall speed, increasing real-time value through pause properties and mechanics.
 - Smarter freedom of movement: Actions such as swapping weapons, drinking a potion, or activating a mode are now free actions. For balance, each free action is limited to one of each type per turn.
 - faster pace: Combat lethality for both enemy and player has been significantly increased to keep combat tense and impactful.
 - Mode flexibility: When starting a new game, you can choose turn-based mode and difficulty, or freely switch between real-time pause mode and turn-based mode in the game options. We are also working on direct HUD switching to provide more convenience.
 
As mentioned above, players can choose whether to accept turn-based combat or switch between real-time and turn-based combat if they wish. There is currently no end date for the beta test, but Obsidian notes that it will release a future update to support the turn-based mode before it is added to the game as a permanent feature.
