The Stanley Kubrick 3 Movie Collection is a 7-disc box set containing three 4K UHD Blu-ray discs and four 1080p Blu-ray discs. Each film comes with its own box set, echoing separate 4K versions of The Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Full Metal Jacket.
All of Kubrick's films that have been given the 4K treatment are incredible from a technical perspective. If you've never watched 2001: A Space Odyssey in 4K, you might be shocked by these updates. It looks so beautiful in 4K it's incredible that it was filmed in 1968. This is a native 4K restoration from the original 70mm wide HD film format. It features Dolby Vision and HDR10 as well as DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1.
2001: A Space Odyssey is by far the most feature-rich movie in the set. In addition to the 4K disc, it comes with the standard Blu-ray version (with optional audio commentary track) and a bonus third Blu-ray disc containing documentaries, interviews, retrospectives, and other behind-the-scenes content.
Inspired by many Short Stories by Arthur C. Clark“2001: A Space Odyssey” is one of the most influential science fiction movies of all time. Clark and Kubrick co-wrote the screenplay.
Speaking of influential films, Kubrick’s 1980 adaptation of Stephen King's novel “The Shining” Widely regarded as one of the greatest horror movies of all time. The Shining’s 4K Ultra HD restoration is just as impressive as 2001: A Space Odyssey. It has Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. The bonus Blu-ray contains four bonus videos, including a 35-minute making-of documentary and a 26-minute behind-the-scenes look at the set design. It also features engaging audio commentary narrated by Kubrick biographer John Baxter and Garrett Brown, inventor of the Steadicam stabilizer used to shoot The Shining.
Full Metal Jacket is one of the best and weirdest films about the Vietnam War, and it looks great on 4K Blu-ray. While it only supports HDR10 and not Dolby Vision, it still looks great and the DTS-HD surround track is fantastic. The Blu-ray bonus disc contains approximately 30 minutes of cast interviews and optional audio commentary by various actors and writers.
The three films in this box set demonstrate how Kubrick managed to leap from one genre to another and deliver a film unlike anything that had come before it.
