Eyes Wide Shut is the second Stanley Kubrick film to be released by Criterion in 2025. Criterion brought Barry Lyndon to 4K Blu-ray in July. Arguably Kubrick's strangest film, and certainly his most sexually explicit, Eyes Wide Shut was a huge success at the box office, but proved too disturbing and strange for some critics and moviegoers in 1999. Today, though, many critics and moviegoers consider the Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman film to be a masterpiece.

The 4K version of Eyes Wide Shut is a three-disc set that includes one 4K UHD disc and two 1080p Blu-ray discs. Like other Criterion releases, this one is designed to be as close as possible to Kubrick's thoroughly detailed vision of how it should be presented. The acclaimed director died less than a week after screening the final cut for Warner Bros. in 1999, but Criterion's restoration was overseen by the film's director of photography, Larry Smith. Since the 1080p version is based on a 4K restoration, it should also be improved over the current Blu-ray version.

It's worth noting that Criterion restored the international version (the aforementioned final cut) rather than the U.S. theatrical version, which was censored in order to earn an R rating.

On a technical level, this version offers support for Dolby Vision HDR and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound.

For the additional material, new interviews were shot by Smith, cinematographer and second unit director Lisa Leone, and Stanley Kubrick archivist Georgina Ogier.

There are also archival extras from previous Blu-ray releases of Eyes Wide Shut, such as interviews with the cast, a documentary examining Kubrick's unfinished film, and more. All of this can be viewed on the included standard Blu-ray disc. The standard Blu-ray edition is a two-disc set with the same extras.

Inside the display case, you'll also find a booklet featuring a 1999 interview with Kubrick and actor Sydney Pollack, as well as a new essay by writer Megan Abbott. Check out the full feature list below.

As mentioned earlier, Kubrick's brilliant 1975 historical drama Barry Lyndon tells the story of a con man who infiltrates high society. 4K Blu-ray for $25 (regularly $50) on Amazon. Barry Lyndon is Criterion's first Stanley Kubrick film to be released on 4K Blu-ray, but the distributor is also printing 1080p Blu-ray and DVD versions of several of the director's other films, including Dr. Strangelove, killand path to glory. The 1080p Blu-ray release on the list below that's worth keeping an eye on is The Killing , as it's one of only two Kubrick films to be released on 4K Blu-ray.

Fans of Kubrick need to watch 4K Blu-ray releases of most of the director's hit films, including The Criterion Collection The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odysseyand Full metal casing, Dr. Strangeloveand Spartacus. The Shining recently joined The Film Vaulta series of limited edition 4K Blu-ray discs designed by Vice Press in collaboration with Warner Bros. UK.

Not all of Kubrick's films have been restored to 4K Blu-ray. this 1956 movie “The Killing” and Kubrick's 1962 adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov's novel “Lolita” Only available on standard Blu-ray discs. We've included a list of Kubrick films available on 1080p Blu-ray below. In some cases, the standard Blu-ray version is significantly cheaper than the 4K version. Note that many 4K releases also come with standard Blu-ray discs. If you enjoy Kubrick's films, you owe it to yourself to check out Taschen's several excellent books on the director's work. Recently, the publisher of premium art books released a massive two-volume hardcover book on The Shining. JW Rinzler's detailed deep dive is based on hundreds of hours of interviews and extensive research. This is the definitive behind-the-scenes look at the making of Kubrick's most beloved film. The second book is a scrapbook containing never-before-seen production documents and photos. This nearly 1,400-page set costs $125, but its scope is incredible. We highly recommend it.

All Kubrick fans should also add Taschen's Stanley Kubrick Archives to their collection. It comes in a large coffee table book edition and more Affordable compact version $20.50.
