Like other luxury comics released by Dark Horse, this 7 x 10-inch hardcover version of Planet has a beautiful, low-key cover art that features a variety of patterns inspired by the International Space Station. To provide a tactile feel, the dark horse carved some patterns and words on the front and back cover. The edges of the 528th page of Book 1 are copper-plated gold. Perhaps most notably, fans will be able to enjoy a full-color artwork printed on 44 pages.
Planet is the first work of Makoto Yukimura in Mangaka and is currently known for its Vinland Saga. The series began publishing in 1999 and ended in 2004, with a total of 26 chapters. Deluxe Edition: Book 1 contains the first half of the story arc.
If you have never read it, the planet occurs in the late 21st century and follows working-class astronauts who clear debris and other artificial hazards. The first ever crew sailing on Jupiter was also planned, as the Earth has abundant resources to further explore human goals to explore the rest of the solar system. This leaves several characters in the collision as the race to Jupiter is filled with dangers, human drama and other elements that threaten this mission.
What makes the planet so interesting is that Yukimura does a lot of research that makes the series feel justified. It is full of real-world technology and science, all set against the backdrop of interesting developments with the actors and the world around them. If you like hard science movies like Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, you'll need to check out this series.
$50 | Release December 2
From a design perspective, Earth Deluxe Edition: Book 2 is very similar to Book 1. The main difference is that the porthole on the front cover has different planets. Beyond that, when Book 2 is released on December 2, you can expect to find the same premium update: the print front and rear cover pattern, metal copper gilded edges and 44 pages of full-color artwork.
Book 2 is 536 pages, longer than the 2016 paperback library and contains the second half of The Planet’s Unforgettable Science Fiction Story. As mentioned earlier, the paperback is no longer printed, so it's nice to see that the story of the entire Earth will be used again in a physically integrated format.
$53.30 ($70)
In the early 2000s, the first three volumes of planets were also adapted into a 26-episode anime series. Since the comics were still running at the time, the adaptation leaned more towards the political themes of the series while introducing new characters into the story. It's still a great series, full of animation, exploring human desire to explore infinite boundaries, and you can pick it up on Amazon for $53.50 ($70) on Blu-ray.

As mentioned above, Yukimura will follow up with Vinland Saga, a series he has worked on for 20 years. Although the planets study human relationships with space, Vinland Saga is an epic storyline that follows the protagonist Thorfinn during the Viking era. While this is a revenge man as a young boy is obsessed with killing his father's murderer, Vinland Saga evolves into a story of a more grander redemption, forgiveness and a new starting point.
Vinland Saga's Deluxe Edition Project In progress, but the dark horse has been moving quickly. Since the release of the first deluxe edition in early 2024, Dark Horse has released six subsequent hardcover editions, with the eighth scheduled to arrive on August 5.
The hardcover versions of these comics collect three volumes of the series on high-quality paper, and they are super large versions that allow you to absorb artwork in all its incredible details. You can also find a lot of reward material here, such as Yukimura's reviews and research notes, revealing his consistent focus on details, exclusive art, interviews and exclusive reward illustrations.
