creator of Dragon QuestYuji Horii thinks final fantasy When it was released in 2001, it was called “ultimate perfection.”
during an interview game informantHorii discussed his experience developing Dragon Quest, which at the time was pitted against the Final Fantasy series as Square and Enix had yet to merge. While he doesn't really consider Final Fantasy to be “competition” per se – while they're both RPGs, they tell stories in very different ways – he does admit that he's “definitely concerned about it”.
“A long time ago, when Final Fantasy first came out, I definitely paid attention to it because it was something we needed to pay attention to,” Horii said, reflecting on what makes the game different. “But I did see one key difference at the time: the protagonists in Final Fantasy, they talk a lot. With Dragon Quest, the key goal[of the game]or the experience it provides the player, is for the player to become the protagonist themselves.
“In Final Fantasy, you observe the protagonist, but you don't necessarily become the protagonist in the game. So I thought that was a very interesting and clear difference between Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, but I didn't necessarily see them as competitors at the time.”
However, with Final Fantasy X, that may have changed.
“Final Fantasy, again,[the protagonist]just talks a lot,” Horii added. “I do love Final Fantasy, though. When I first saw Final Fantasy X, I remember feeling like it was the ultimate perfection of Final Fantasy.”
