one Borderlands 4 dataminer claims that the game may have featured one of the series' most polarizing characters at some point during its development. After digging through the game's files, EpicNNG uploaded their findings online.
Warning: The following contains spoilers for Borderlands 3 and Borderlands 4
After spending time on Kairos, players eventually encountered Siren Amara in Borderlands 4 as part of a search for the evil Vile Lector. Amara is a playable Siren character first introduced in 2019's Borderlands 3. But EpicNNG believes the files they found Name the player who originally teamed up with another Siren at this point in the story: Ava.
Well, I think we're going to discuss:
AVA removed from Borderlands 4
There are numerous files related to her in the game, more specifically outlining that she was completely replaced by Amara late in development. Which means, yes, she was originally going to be teamed up with… https://t.co/QF8ESnQp0p pic.twitter.com/tBoVNJ8hpq— EpicNNG (@EpicNNG) October 6, 2025
Siren-in-training debuted in Borderlands 3, but over the years, she's become more of a nuisance than a show-stopper due to her role in the game and overall character arc. The files uncovered by EpicNNG have several “Ava” titles, with Amara using abilities very similar to the Siren powers Ava inherited from her late mentor Maya.
“It appears that everything except reference material has been completely removed, including audio files, models, etc.,” Added EpicNNGpointing out that this may have been an “intentional error” on the part of Gearbox staff, given how difficult it is to find clues to post-launch content from Borderlands 4 data. “This game is impeccable in terms of data mining,” they explained. “There is nothing pre- or post-launch in the files so far. It would be more believable if the developers intentionally left it out.”
Ava's character in Borderlands 3 has drawn a lot of criticism, with many players pointing out her annoying personality, her role in getting fan-favorite character Maya killed by the Calypso twins, and her immature outbursts. She's essentially Scrappy-Doo from Borderlands, but deleted scenes from the game do suggest that her redemption arc is coming as she realizes how her actions led to Maya's death.
last year, Transmission boss Randy Pitchford asked his audience How they feel about Ava's return, and the general consensus is that there's strong opposition to seeing the young Siren in Borderlands 4.
Whether Ava returns remains to be seen, but we do know that another familiar face, Moxie's daughter Ellie, will be a major character on the show. The first Borderlands 4 post-launch expansion pack next to New Vault Hunter C4sh.
