Borderlands 4 has the highest launch month sales in the series' history in the U.S.

Borderlands 4 At least in the US it seems to be a hit, with it outperforming Borderlands 3 at the box office.

Gearbox's looter shooter was the best-selling paid video game in September, debuting as the third-best-selling game so far in 2025, US video game data company Circana said. It was September's bestseller on both Xbox and combined PC store charts.

Most importantly for publisher 2K Games, Borderlands 4's launch month sales were the highest of any game in the series' history, nearly 30% higher than its previous best, Borderlands 3.

It's worth noting that this statistic has nothing to do with unit sales, but rather with revenue generated. Borderlands 4 will launch for $69.99 (finally, There's a weird debate online about whether it will go to $80), the deluxe version is priced at $99.99, and the super deluxe version is priced at $129.99. When Borderlands 3 launched in September 2019, the Standard Edition cost $59.99, the Deluxe Edition cost $79.99, and the Super Deluxe Edition cost $99.99. It's also worth noting that Borderlands 3 was a PC exclusive on the Epic Games Store for six months after launch, while Borderlands 4 was released on PC via Steam and consoles.

As such, we don't have firm sales figures yet (2K Games hasn't made any announcements so far). But according to Circana, Borderlands 4 was the first Borderlands game to be the best-selling game in its launch month, so there's that.

There were encouraging signs when Borderlands 4 launched last month. Set a record for the series with the highest number of people online at the same time on Steam (Neither Sony nor Microsoft disclose player numbers). However, it suffered from performance issues, resulting in a “mixed” review rating on Steam on Valve's platform. Gearbox has released a series of patches since launch, but fans are still waiting Borderlands 4's 'Day 30 Update' will be released later this week.

Incidentally, NBA 2K26 is the best-selling game of 2025 so far, ahead of Capcom's Monster Hunter Wild. “Helldivers 2” was the fourth best-selling game on the Xbox platform in September and ranked third when it was released in August. Helldivers 2 was the sixth best-selling game overall in September and the 19th best-selling game so far in 2025.
