Long-term carnival gaming and Internet gaming barriers are still relatively new phenomena that are not fully understood. However, a recent study examined the effects of overeating on boys and girls, and the results showed that if men play games for five hours or more at a time, there was a greater chance of symptoms of IGD addiction.
PLOS A 2022 Hong Kong-based study was recently shared, edited using male and female schoolchildren. For the purposes of this report, both smartphone games and PC games meet the length of the carnival session.
The study consisted of 2,000 students from primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong, a median 12-year-old. According to the survey results, 38% of boys self-reported rave games, while only 24% of girls do the same. The results also show that male players engaged in overeating are more likely than women to experience IGD, depression, stress, poor sleep quality and “lower educational self-efficacy.”
The results of this study are far from certainty due to the small sample groups. However, they do show that there is a real gender gap between men and women with the negative effects of rage games. The study also noted that non-familiar player boys and non-male girls had lower levels of stress, anxiety, sadness, and depression compared to non-familiar player girls.
The study concluded that interventions for the treatment of IGD and overeating should be gender-specific to address the potential physical and mental health risks that follow. More studies may be conducted in the future to examine these results and based on reports' findings.
