DK and Diddy returned again in January, this time in HD on the Nintendo Switch. Donkey Kong Country Return HD is an excellent side-scrolling platformer with nine different worlds and 80 levels.
When DKC Return was originally released on the Wii in 2010, it was one of the most challenging Nintendo platformer games. Long-term fans and anyone who loves tricky platforms will be happy to know that the original difficulty setting is still there. However, this version also has a more modified and tolerant setup described in the 2013 Nintendo 3DS port. Even with more friendly settings enabled, Donkey Kong Country is back in HD, which requires more than most modern Nintendo platform games.

It's not as challenging as its predecessor, so if you're new to the series, we actually recommend starting here. Tropical Freeze also has more playable characters. Aside from the Donkey and Didi King, you can be like a random thought, a Dixie or a Trendy. Each character has its own unique action, which feels different enough to guarantee multiple playbacks.
Although Tropical Freeze is basically the same game on the Switch and Wii U, adding a sleek Kong basically creates a helper mode similar to the Nabbit and Toadette of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. The stylish holes can double jump and hover, and his surfboard keeps him standing on the nails.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong is not similar to the two DKC platform games above. Instead, the remake of Game Boy's classics brought Donkey Kong back to his villain era. Essentially, it's a spiritual successor to Game Boy's Donkey Kong, which is itself a homage to classic arcade games – Mario vs. Donkey Kong is a puzzle platform that prefers Quick Wits over reflections.
After Donkey Kong steals a bunch of mini Mario toys, you have to recover them by completing a variety of room challenges. Mario vs. Donkey Kong has over 130 levels in total. Most levels are bite-sized and can be done in minutes, but it also has some clever boss fights and cool optional challenges.
Note that although it's technically a platformer, Mario moves much slower than the Mainline Super Mario series. The weight of the motion system is an emphasis on the methodical puzzle focus.

As a reminder, these switch games are also compatible with Switch 2, and they all have full gameplay on the cartridges, just in case you don't like Nintendo's game keycard system.
