Localized video games can be challenging, and in terms of animal travel, 2002 brought the apparent Western social speed to the West to the West, which proved to be a hard labor. The biggest hurdle is renaming the game, as its Japanese title Dōbutsuno Mori had to change its western distribution.
The entire localization work took six months to a year to complete, and Leslie Swan, former Nintendo localization manager, said Time extensionone of the proposed titles is Animal Acres, the name is inspired by the town’s grid. Nintendo eventually rejected this, and the title of Animal Crossing was approved.
The late Satoru Iwata (who was then head of Nintendo's corporate planning department) became famous when he heard that Swan and her team were doing British localization. Game producer Takashi Tezuka also warned the team to take on the task because not only would they have to translate into thousands of texts, but they also needed to rename characters, come up with new slogans for them, and figure out how to adjust Japanese-specific themes for Western audiences.
“I was meeting with Mr. Ivata and some other heads of the development group, and we were just walking around and saying 'This is what we were going to do' and I just said, 'Okay,' Well, Mr. Tezuka asked us to work in the animal forest and he just laughed,” Swan said. “He just smiled and said, 'I don't know what you should do.' Indeed, everything in that game was very specific to Japan.”
