Team Cherry revealed that they are considering making a new game instead of Hollow Knight 3 – but also admitted that the only time they care about is “death”.
It took co-founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen seven years to create silk songthe much-anticipated follow-up to Hollow Knight's breakout hit—even though they had no plans to do so. period Full interview with Jason Schreier, Bloombergof which the duo Plans for Silksong DLC confirmedthe conversation turned to what was coming next.
It sounds like Team Cherry hasn't decided whether to make Hollow Knight 3 or an entirely new video game, but Gibson and Perron yes Think about how much time they have left to make video games.
“…We do have plans to make other games,” Gibson said. “The only time issue is really – and we've talked about it before – death. If you spend seven years on each project, and maybe add another two years, that's not that far away. So, it would be nice to do a few more games. Obviously, our time frame still allows us to fit in a few more games. Barring an unexpected tragedy.”
It's a grim thought, but one that many well-known video game developers are pondering. Bethesda development chief Todd Howard says before Starfield launches in 2023 The Elder Scrolls 6 may be the last game in his fantasy seriesConsider how long it takes Microsoft-owned studios to make games.
“When we see The Elder Scrolls 6, I probably shouldn't say this, but if I do the math, I'm not getting any younger,” Howard said. “How long do people play The Elder Scrolls? This might be the last one I play. I don't know.”
In May, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima, 62, revealed that he had contemplated his own mortality during the Covid-19 pandemic, during which he became seriously ill. “It’s not so much turning 60 as a turning point in my life, but my experience during the pandemic,” he said. “I was seriously ill and had eye surgery. Before that, I didn't think of myself as old, you know? I just didn't feel my age, and I thought that as long as I lived, I could create.
“But then I got sick and I couldn't create anything. I saw a lot of people around me passing away. I was faced with death. Of course, I recovered, but now I'm thinking, 'Wait, how many years do I have left to make a game or a movie?' Maybe I have 10 years left?”
Kojima even put some ideas on a USB flash drive and handed them to his assistant during the epidemic, “kind of like a will.” At the time he was worried about his studio, Kojima Productions, and made sure employees would continue to get paid if he couldn't make the game.
As for Team Cherry, Gibson and Pellen said that whatever they do next, whether it's a brand new game or Hollow Knight 3, it will be similar to games the studio has made before.
“We said we would go to other places as well,” Gibson said. “Even though we've also said that, these experiences are still about exploring big worlds full of weird characters and giant bosses and stuff like that. So there's going to be a familiar through-line there. That's not to say we won't go back to these Hollow Knight worlds. We do have ideas for what form those worlds will take. But we also don't want to be the ones doing Hollow Knight exclusively.”
