Set in 1988, the game is the origin story of long-time Yakuza characters Kiryu Kazuma and Goro Majima, revealing how they became the legend of the Dojima Dragon and the mad dogs of Shimano. At the heart of Yakuza 0 is 3D Beat-'-Up, with a very important point in storytelling, and the main beats in the game are like the plot of the Gangland drama series.

The game is also full of transfers, as there are some next-to-stories between the missions and many mini-games to participate.
