Overwatch 2 Game Director Aaron Keller talked about the criticism of Blizzard Entertainment, which “dropped the ball” when it comes to story content, pve and animated shorts, etc.
Blizzard's popular hero shooter's face opens up about the team's struggle in an interview with content creators Jay3 and Overwatch 2 voice actor Conor McLeod. Although the title of the multiplayer game is well known for its team-based gameplay, Keller recognizes that certain story content needs to be “back” to Overwatch 2 to “shoot all cylinders.”
“There is one thing we hear that players see online, you see online… it feels like Overwatch lost the ball in terms of story and legend,” Keller said in response to a question from McLeod. “You kind of see.

Overwatch’s animated shorts are a pain for fans. The Blizzard was originally built on an excitement in a series of high-quality films from 2016 to 2023, and everyone highlights the abilities of characters like Reinhardt, Hanzo, Genji, Genji, Mei, Bastion, and also shows how many of its 43 playable characters are suitable for bigger stories. The initially frequent legendary falls eventually began to surface in the release of Overwatch 2 in 2022. It has been nearly two years since fans obtained the 3D animated film.
When Blizzard announced that it would be yes, the frustration of lack of animated shorts felt a boiling point Cancel its PVE hero ambitions in summer 2023. With long-promoted story-driven mode cancelled and animated shorts released crawls, the blizzard must start from scratch. Although there have been no major updates in years, Keller said the Overwatch 2 team did not completely leave a story.
“Frankly, we do have a big plan to follow the story in the game. It's the campaign and everything like that.” “That's not resolved. So when that happens, it's a reset moment for us and we want to go back to it. I think one of the best parts of Overwatch is the universe and the characters. It's definitely the goal we're going to go back to that goal. We have to have a step forward, we have to have to move forward in order to get going.”''
Blizzard announced the game performance of Overwatch 2 in February this year. During the cracking process, the studio announced a major new PVP game mode called Stadium, along with the return of free loot box cosmetic rewards, two new heroes, and game plans for next year’s content. Many of these additions have since been launched, including the basic game changes for “Perks”, which suggests that Blizzard has found the foundation as it makes a good attitude in terms of its huge commitment.
The Overwatch 2 community has embraced many of these changes with open arms, but the desire for story content is still echoing Reddit Threads and X/Twitter posts as new players flock to why fans suddenly talk about 2016’s hero shooter.
One idea that many fans, including McLeod, would love to see, is an Overwatch TV series. Keller said he was not against the idea and even said “we would love to do this.” It is unclear how, when, or if Keller and Overwatch 2 Team can enter another golden age. One thing is clear: Keller knows Overwatch fans want more story content.
“I think let's say Overwatch 2 is launching on all cylinders, we need to get some of that back,” Keller said.
Overwatch 2 is currently in season 17: Power UP, which includes many retro-play style skins, mythical makeup from Reaper and D.VA, new stadium heroes, and crossover content with Gi Joe.
