Sony Blu-ray players have a good reputation, and the X700U model sales offer many of the features in some of Sony's high-end Blu-ray players. It plays 4K Blu-ray in native 4K UHD (2160p) resolution and supports HDR10, improving picture brightness.
It comes with HDMI cable, but if you don't have a backup, we recommend grabbing the second 4K cable. That's because the player has two HDMI ports. The main thing is video and audio, it is the only video you have to use, but the second output is dedicated to audio. Separating audio from video output produces richer, clearer sound, so dual ports are common on dedicated 4K Blu-ray players. This is one of the benefits of using media players for Blu-ray instead of consoles like the PS5 or Xbox Series X. You can grab one Amazon Basics 4K HDMI cable for $6 Now.
The UBP-X700U also has a coaxial SPDIF that can be connected to speakers, speaker bars and TVs. IN-IN-AUDIO supports terminology, the UBP-X700U is equipped with high-end audio enhancements including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.
One of the coolest features of a dedicated Blu-ray player like the X700U is picture upgrades. The X700U can read 4K Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray and DVD. When enabled, built-in technology will enhance the resolution of standard Blu-ray and DVD.
While we haven't tested the 2025 version of the X700U, the amplification feature in previous iterations is impressive. The standard 1080p Blu-ray looks very close to 4K resolution, while the 480p resolution DVD is better. Honestly, DVDs usually look bad on modern 4K and HD panels without improving technology. That is, outputs of heights vary, sometimes jagged edges or obvious weirdness won’t appeal to viewers looking for a real experience.
