Many third-party studios offer titles for game keycards on the new Switch 2 console, which, according to Capcom, considers this format to be digitally sold.
In the Q&A session after its most important financial performance meeting (via Nintendolife), Capcom has a concise answer to these Nintendo cartridges, as it simply answers the game key card “records it as a digital sale”. This is Capcom's classification of storage media, but it's unclear whether other publishers and studios share this opinion.
The general mood of game key cards is also unpopular, as game protectionists cite concerns surrounding formats. The game key card is essentially the game's authentication key, because when inserted, the user still needs to download the full game to their Switch 2 console. These cartridges are not locked to the systemso if you decide to sell the game, it still has resale value. Most third-party games on the Switch 2 are sold as game key cards – most likely because the Switch 2 only offers 64GB of storage –And only a few developers offer complete games on the cartridge Together with Nintendo's own first-party version.
Street Fighter 6 on Capcom: 1-2 Years Fighters Edition on Switch 2 makes things even more confusing, like the complete base game yes On the cartridge, all the extra content needs to be downloaded from Nintendo Eshop. This is probably to reduce costs – Street Fighter 6 doesn’t have any DLC for physical purchase either – but reselling water is indeed a bit confusing for anyone looking to sell the cartridge in the future. In response to the debate about game key cards, Limited Run Games confirmed that it will have all numbered distributions, including the full game on the cartridge.
Meanwhile, Nintendo's Switch 2 made a huge start worldwide, as the company said it sold 3.5 million units in the first four days of launch alone.
