In addition to debuting the new gameplay, Sonic team leader Takashi Iizuka joined us at IGN Live to share more about Sonic Racing: Crossworlds and why this is a big crossover kart racer you need to play.
We only have one day from Sonic Racing: Crossworld's big reveal at the summer race festival Like Dragon's Ichiban Kasuga, Persona 5's Joker and Minecraft's Steve, Alex and Creeper, Hatsune Miku will all be guest characters, and Iizuka reflects the process of choosing who can join in all the fun.
“We wanted to make sure the second lap will be full of surprises because you’re going to a world that you don’t even think might be possible,” Iizuka said. “So when brainstorming, we can do something really fun and exciting, we know it would be great to go to some SEGA IP worlds, but we also want to go into other IP worlds and really surprise people in the second lap. When we have to think about which worlds are fun, we really think Minecraft and its characters are fun.”
For those strangers Sonic racing: Crossworlds’ three lap formula is very interesting, and it’s a very standard first lap. But first, racers will pick a new world where everyone will race through a travel ring.
“The three lap formula is really good for racers,” Iizuka said. “It’s really easy to understand, we want to make new things fresh and fresh so that you’re not just racing in the same place over and over again. That’s the idea of travel ring forming, it’s to get you new things and unknown places on the second lap. That’s not all.
We then moved the conversation to the project, and Iizuka shared that he liked Sonic Racing: Crossworlds paid tribute to Sonic Racing Games by adding Rocket Boxing Projects and Sonic Racing, but he did admit that his favorite project in this new game was the power on the Monster Truck, “Let you turn your vehicle into a monster truck and ride more and more, and just go over the ride and just go over your ride.”
There is more to look forward to when Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is released on September 25, 2025, including the return of Sonic Riders’ hoverboards, any character can ride in any vehicle, ride up to 12 players online, and even the most popular feature in cross-competition.
Speaking of different platforms, Sonic Racing: Crossworlds will be released on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch. Yes, even if it may come, Switch 2 players will soon be able to get on the road with more than 23 racers in this race.
