Nintendo discusses Mario Kart World's new favorite character Cow and shows the concept art of putting her in-game placement to ensure playable characters.
Speak as a fascinating part Ask the developer Interview, Mario Karting World The development team revealed their “stupid sketch”, which convinced the game's development team to upgrade from background characters to mature parts of the game's lineup.
“In previous games in the series, cattle were part of the landscape or a barrier to one of the courses,” said producer Kosuke Yabuki. “But when we created an early version of a course in this game, the sketch came out when players could take courses through the courses.”
The sketch shows a smiling cow driving a truck that looks like she is not caring for in the world, and it is immediately caught as the cow becomes the inspiration for Mario Kart's next playable character and causes other background NPCs to become playable as well.
Art Director Masaaki Ishikawa continued: “Every new Mario Kart game has new characters to compete for, but since we added a lot of characters to the last game, we wanted to know where we could go from there.”
“And one of the designers came up with that stupid cow parade sketch, and I thought to myself, ‘That’s it!’ (laughs) So when we realize that the surroundings actually contain a lot of untapped resources.”

The increase in the Mario Kart world lineup was followed by Cheep Cheep (Red Fish Mario often had to dodge) and Pokey (smiling, swinging cactus character) also became playable.
“Like, 'They are NPCs, but they can play?' What is it?” Yabuki continued. “It’s fun to see a four-legged cow holding a motorcycle handlebar with its front hooves.”
“But, when she jumped, she moved a proper tetraploid position.” “So I'm pretty sure the cattle are still in touch with her animal nature. (Laughs)”
Elsewhere in the same interview, Yabuki confirmed that Nintendo had begun his open world of nature and thought of Mario Kart's world's name “starting from the early stages of development.”
“If the idea was just to add more classes, I think we would call it Mario Kart 9,” Yabuki said. “But that's not our approach this time. We want to take the series to the next level. So we decided to give up this number and get a brand new title.”
Ultimately, the development team discussed the addition of unlockable character costumes in the Mario Kart community, which was found by snacking in Yoshi's direct restaurant in different games.
Each region unlocks its own clothing and offers its own variety of food. An example given is the Yoshi Express in the volcanic region, selling hot soup inspired by Bowser.
Initially, Nintendo said it didn’t associate its ideas with unlockable outfits and food, and the former was just planned to buy from its in-game store location. But stopping these interrupts the game's open-world driving experience, anyway – didn't Mario magically change the costumes while devouring food?
“The question arose: 'Does Mario actually eat mushrooms?',” Yabuki said with a smile. The query prompted Mario Kart World's development team to hunt down Nintendo legend Takashi Tezuka and make a verdict.
Yabuki confirmed: “Tezuka-san (answer), 'Yes, he is'.” So the food that produces clothing in the Mario Kart world was born.
The biggest surprise in the interview may be the revelation Mario Karting World begins developing on Nintendo Switch until performance concerns lead to game delays To enable on switch 2.
Mario Kart World and Cow will arrive on Switch 2 on the console's release date (June 5, 2025).
