'We believe we can do better' – Wizards of the Coast 'back to the drawing board' with Magic: The Gathering's Monster Hunter collaboration

Wizards of the Coast has announced that it has “restarted” its work with Magic: The Gathering and Monster Hunter, admitting it's not good enough.

last week, IGN reports on the official announcement of Wizards of the Coast's Secret Lair Monster Hunter Magic: The Gathering super droporiginally scheduled to be available from December 1st to 22nd.

The collaboration includes four individual products, each priced at $29.99, with the foil version priced at $39.99. All of the cards involved are copies of existing Monster Hunter themed cards, with nothing mechanically unique or new.

It's fair to say that fans reacted negatively to the news, and based on Wizards of the Coast statement on the matterthis strong opposition directly reached its peak.

“Let's cut to the chase: the Secret Lair x Monster Hunter Superdrop we launched last week didn't live up to expectations,” the company said. “We clearly hear you are disappointed, but we believe we can do better. Therefore, we are delaying this release and completely redesigning this Superdrop.

“Like many of you, we are big fans of Monster Hunter. That's why we made this Superdrop. But in our excitement, we missed elements like card selection and faithfully integrating Monster Hunter's world and mechanics. As a result, the overall structure of this Superdrop isn't up to the standard you'd expect.

“Taking back the Superdrop isn't something we do often, but we're committed to doing better. Capcom also supports our efforts to do it again on the Superdrop.

“As a result, we are withdrawing this plan and will share new details and an updated release date in the coming months. Stay tuned for more information in 2026.”
