Just weeks later, Mass Effect developer BioWare reiterated its commitment to making the next game in the series Publisher EA agrees to take-private deal worth $55 billion.
in a blog Today, to mark the Mass Effect franchise's annual N7 Day celebrations, series boss Mike Gamble said he wanted to set the record straight after all the “recent rumors.”
“Let's start by setting the record straight: The next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe,” Gamble wrote.
Fans have questioned whether EA will continue to work on Mass Effect and BioWare as a whole after the huge deal and the lackluster response to the studio's last game, Dragon Age: The Veiled Keeper. Today's announcement is clearly an attempt to calm fan concerns – although there's still very little actual new information about the next Mass Effect game.
“The truth is, BioWare has been very busy the last few years,” Gamble continued today. “But right now, the team is focused on Mass Effect. We have a lot of universe to cover, a lot of features to build, and a lot of romance to figure out.”
Yes, while it's no surprise, fans are at least now convinced that you'll be able to romance more sci-fi characters, head tendrils, and more.
“We're excited about what we're building, and we promise you: it's going to be a lot of fun showing it off when we're ready,” Gamble concluded. “Until then, thank you for your patience because you are all hungry for news and I see you looking for secret meanings in my tweets (well, sometimes they have secret meanings).”
It's worth noting that many of the letters in the text above were italicized in BioWare's original blog post, which together spelled out “Tavern URL“Is there some fresh Krogan lore hidden somewhere on the BioWare blog for fans to find? We're now scouring the site to find out.
Other festivities today will include purchasing new Mass Effect gear, as well as free cross-over items in Apex Legends and Skate (which will hopefully avoid Criticism of Skate’s recent pricey Dead Space crossover).
Finally, in other Mass Effect news, BioWare confirmed today that Amazon's upcoming TV adaptation will tell a new story following the events of the series' original trilogy — rather than a retelling of Commander Shepard's adventures like the series' original trilogy. It's a shrewd move that avoids contradicting players' own stories – and potentially ties the TV show to the next Mass Effect game, which fans believe will be set hundreds of years after the ending of Mass Effect 3.
“Everyone is yelling at me for not using N7 Day to provide a ton of information… I mean, I get it,” Gamble said afterward release on social media. “I'm a fan too. I want you to see something. But it's not the time…yet. How many years has it been announced? Yes. Are we busy? Yes. Are we 100% on Mass Effect now? Yes.”
BioWare first confirmed it was developing another Mass Effect game back in 2020, via Movie trailer showcases return of fan-favorite character Liaralooks even older now. Over the next few years, the studio dropped a few more Easter eggs pointing to the state of the galaxy years later – but it's clear the project is still some way off from an actual release.
