Halo Infinite's next big update will be its last, so Halo Studios can focus on “developing multiple Halo games”

“As we look back on four years of development and updates for Halo Infinite, we want to thank our community for their unwavering support,” Halo Studios said. “Without your feedback and enthusiasm, Halo Infinite multiplayer wouldn’t be the special place it is today: a powerful killing and gaming arena for every Spartan.

“With multiple Halo games in development, we need the entire team to come together to deliver new experiences with the same passion and care that the community has given us. While we remain committed to supporting Halo Infinite on its path forward, Operation Infinite is the last major content update currently planned.”

Halo Studios (formerly known as 343 Industries) is leaving Halo Infinite behind after a four-year delay when it releases in December 2021 on Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. Microsoft originally intended to make it the launch game for Xbox Series X and S and launch it a year early, but delayed it due to negative feedback about the game's highly anticipated release in July 2020.

Halo Infinite has gone through significant changes in the years since its release, including a rebrand from the developer, Chapter 343 Industry, Halo Studioand Multiple rounds of layoffs. This is after Halo Infinite's player base drops sharply after launch Fans expressed frustration with the lack of content, poor progression system, and aggressive monetization. 'Game Changers' battle royale mode canceled.

Gamers have pointed out that Halo Infinite isn't even halfway through Microsoft's well-documented 10-year plan for the game (it's not called Halo Infinite for nothing). July 2020, IGN interviews former Halo Infinite studio head Chris Leewho described Halo Infinite as “the beginning of our future platform.”

“We want Infinite to be able to grow over time, rather than having those numbered games and segmenting them like we did before,” he continued. “This is really about setting up Halo Infinite as the beginning of the next 10 years of Halo, and then we build that together with the fans and the community.”

While ongoing updates have significantly improved the experience, Halo Infinite has never fully reached its potential. The focus now is on Halo: Campaign Evolved, which has had a rocky ride since its announcement. One of the key members of Bungie's original Halo development team expressed concerns about some of the changes being made.
