Times may change, but if there's one thing that's timeless, it's a Castlevania adventure in which you crack the whip and take on Dracula when he has home advantage. Konami's long-running series has been dormant of late, but with decades of games and a critically acclaimed anime adaptation on Netflix, the monster-slaying series remains a fan favorite and hasn't grown dull with age.
From its humble beginnings on the NES, to its grand reinvention on the PS1, its modern revival on the Game Boy Advance, and its bold forays into the three-dimensional realm, Castlevania games at their best have always been a tight balance between brutal design and quick-reaction action. With such a large and diverse collection, it's not easy to rank the best Castlevania games, but we've tried our best. That said, expect you to disagree with at least some of the choices and placements.
What does the future hold for Castlevania?
While there have been many Castlevania games over the decades, the series seems to be on hiatus as of late. The last big release was 2014's Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, and since then there's been a steady stream of mobile games and classic collections. Crossovers with games like Dead by Daylight. On television, Netflix’s animated adaptation of Castlevania has been critically acclaimed and recently spawned a spin-off series Castlevania: Nocturne Continue the story of the Belmont family and Alucard, son of Dracula.
