Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser says Red Dead Redemption 3 “could happen” and he's a little sad about it “because it's a cohesive two-game storyline”

Rockstar Games co-founder and former head writer Dan Houser said he would be more sad than GTA 6 when he learned Red Dead Redemption 3 was being developed without him, but admitted the game “could happen.”
2018 epic western movies Red Dead Redemption 2 Considered a masterpiece and one of the greatest video games of all time. Houser is the game's lead writer, and he has written almost all Rockstar games. but Left the company five years agoHouser recently confirmed to IGN GTA 6 won't have a story or character set developed by himbut I still expect this game to be great.
now, in Lex Friedman Podcast InterviewHouser said he'll have stronger feelings when Rockstar inevitably returns with a follow-up to Red Dead Redemption.
“Certainly, giving up something that I'd been working on for about 20 years in one way or another and spent the last 10 or 11 years writing them, writing all of them, or, you know, being the lead writer on all of them, whatever it was… it was a big change to give up. It was sad in a way,” Hauser said.
“Because each Grand Theft Auto game is a stand-alone story, so with… I think it would probably be sadder in a way if someone went on to make Red Dead because it was a cohesive two-game storyline. It would probably be sadder to hear that someone was doing that. But again, that could happen. I don't own the IP. That's part of the deal. It's a privilege to work on something, but you don't necessarily own it.”
Is Red Dead Redemption 3 inevitable? Houser seems to think the Red Dead Redemption series will continue, but it's worth noting that the series started with 2004's Red Dead Redemption, so perhaps Rockstar will create a new sub-series if it thinks the time is right for more Red Dead Redemptions.
Speaking of which, in 2023, Roger Clark, who plays the playable protagonist Arthur Morgan in “Red Dead Redemption 2”, Says he's “sure” fans will see Red Dead Redemption 3 “one day”, But he qualified that statement, saying he didn't know when that would be. Clark also ruled out the possibility of Arthur Morgan returning to the game, if that is the case. This may seem obvious if you've played Red Dead Redemption 2, but there's always the possibility that Rockstar is considering another prequel.
“I'm sure we'll see Red Redemption 3 one day,” Clark said. “When that will be – I have absolutely no idea. And don't expect Arthur's involvement. I feel like his story has already been told.”
exist Later interviewed by IGNClark expanded on his thoughts: “Yeah, it's really popular! I thought it was obvious. What about you? And I don't have any inside information, but of course there will be another Red Dead. It's sold over 60 million copies!”
He continued: “Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said it himself. He said that GTA and Red Dead are famous series from Rockstar Games and they will return in the future. So there will undoubtedly be another Red Dead. But will Arthur Morgan be involved? To be honest, I highly doubt it. And I think it will be quite a while before we see any new Red Dead-related titles. I don't know how it will be out, but I wouldn't bet on Arthur being involved.”
Currently, the focus is mainly on Grand Theft Auto 6, which will be released in May 2026.
