Netflix has been telling investors for years that it is serious about investing in the video game industry. But the streamer’s ambitions may need to be readjusted again. Boss Fight – the studio behind Netflix Squid Game: Unleashed Mobile Games – has been closed.
The news was shared by David Rippy, CEO and Co-Founder of Boss Fight His LinkedIn pageand shared his gratitude for the experience:
“Thank you to everyone who reached out today,” Lippi wrote. “Of course, this is rough news, but I'm extremely grateful for the time we've had at Netflix. We've worked with some great people and made a lot of games that I'm very proud of, including Squid Game Unleashed, which was #1 in 26 countries. You'll see a lot of Boss Fighters posts like this. If you have any openings, please consider them – they are outstanding talents and true professionals. As for Bill, Scott, and me – We'll take some steps to catch our breath before fixing anything next. If anything interesting happens, work-wise or otherwise, I'd love to hear from you.”
Last summer, Netflix co-CEO, president and director Greg Peter said the streaming company Will “increase” investment in games Partly to explore new monetization options. Earlier this month, Netflix Five new games added– LEGO Party, Boggle Party, Pictionary: Game Night, Tetris Time Warp and Party Crashers – can be played on your TV using your phone as a controller.
Previously, Netflix had bigger plans for a AAA multiplayer shooter, with team members including Halo and Destiny veteran Joe Staten. However, The game and the studio behind it have been shut down 2024. Netflix gaming executive Alain Tascan later told us Bloomberg Why the streamer killed the project.
“I don't want this move to be seen as, 'We're not going to do big, ambitious games,'” Tuskan said. “It's just the type of game…I think there's a mismatch with the platform. The team is very good at what they do, but we're not going to be the best partner for them to express their skills and expertise.”
