Netflix is producing a variety of movies and TV series based on the world-famous multiplayer board game Catan.
In Catan, players take on the role of settlers who attempt to establish and develop the land while trading and acquiring resources. Its slogan is: “Trade. Build. Settle.”
according to typeNetflix has acquired the global rights to Catan and plans to launch various live-action and animated projects. People talk about movies, scripted and unscripted television. All projects will be produced by Darren Kyman of Asmodee (recently spun off from Embracer), Pete Fenlon of Catan Studios, and Guido and Benjamin Teuber, sons of Catan inventor Klaus Teuber.
Teuber first published Catan in 1995 in Germany. It went on to become one of the biggest board games of all time, selling over 40 million copies. He died in 2023 at the age of 70.
Benjamin and Guido Teuber, Co-CEOs of Catan GmbH, made the following comments: “When our father Klaus Teuber first launched Catan 30 years ago, he imagined an ideal world where people could come together through trading, building and settling, both at the dinner table and beyond. The partnership with Netflix marks an exciting new chapter in this journey. Thirty years on, Catan Connecting families and friends around the world, we're excited to see it inspire storytelling on a global stage – staying true to our father's vision of creativity, strategy and connection.”
There is no release window for any Catan projects, and no details about them. But it's clear that after a string of successes, Netflix sees huge value in projects based on board games and video games. In fact, Netflix acquired the rights to Monopoly from Hasbro Entertainment earlier this year.
