Borderlands 4 players tearfully wave goodbye to their hard-earned legendary loot after it exploded from a boss and got trapped outside the bounds

Borderlands 4 is a looter shooter that revolves around… loot. But what happens when you can't get your hard-earned legendary drops because you're stuck outside a border or behind an invisible wall? Players of Desperate Borderlands 4 have also encountered this problem and are now begging developer Gearbox to fix it.
If you've played Borderlands 4, you probably know this feeling. Legendary drops create that European thrill when a downed boss erupts in a confetti-like loot explosion. This is something the Borderlands series has always done well, maybe even better than any other looter shooter. when Gearbox head Randy Pitchford recently said that Borderlands would have “good competitors” if more developers better understood why players love loot. Most people agree with him.
But if that legendary plane goes out of bounds, the frustration can be as intense as the excitement that comes with it. The strength is doubled if the legend spirals out of existence after a particularly difficult boss battle.
This has been an issue since Borderlands 4 launched, but it's become more serious this week with the weekly endgame content reset (rotation). oppressor Enter this week's Big Encore boss fight. The problem here is that the Oppressor is a flying enemy (flying enemies in shooters are almost always more annoying than other enemies), meaning it flies through the sky, sometimes over areas that are out of reach for the player. What happens when you land a critical hit in the air? Loot sometimes lands on rooftops, behind invisible walls out of reach, or off the map entirely.
Players are understandably angry. “Don't waste your iridium on this week's Big Encore Boss Opressor unless you want to lose the loot,” announced Reddit user PuzzleheadedDust8094. “If you value your Iridium and don't like having your items taken away from you because Gearbox can't seem to stop your loot from flying out of the arena or through walls, then you should definitely avoid fighting this boss until they fix this issue.
“I've lost a lot of loot because bosses dropped stuff in areas you couldn't reach, either because it was a giant death pit, or because of fake invisible walls. This week's Big Encore boss is probably the biggest offender yet. I've lost (I wish I was kidding) 7 out of 10 points worth of Big Encore loot. That's 700 hard-earned iridium down the drain.”
“I swear to God, if they don't address the issue of the oppressor's loot being out of bounds or spread throughout the arena instead of where the boss is, and flying around for a full minute before you hit him, I might lose a little confidence,” says StretchDizzy7792.
“Please check your Big Encore selection. Two weeks in a row the boss has had issues (last week was looted under the floor). It takes 15 minutes of farming the boss to realize if there is an issue that most people are experiencing.
“I wish they had delayed the patch to add the fix.”
“Big Encore… 6 kills. 3 legendaries out of bounds. 0 legendaries in missing loot boxes,” soloway says. “Horse apple! Absolute horse apple!!”
This is a reference to Borderlands 4's Lost Loot Machine, which was supposed to be a fallback solution to this problem, collecting lost loot and saving it for later collection. But it doesn't seem to be working properly – at least, Players think it's not working – Because it tends to favor low-quality loot over rare loot, and will therefore fill up, leaving no room for that loot.
“The Lost Loot Machine must be destroyed,” said one disgruntled player. “There's no way it's working right now. I only see one purple and one blue item in there. The rest have been white and green.”
“Once filled, it should replace gear with higher quality loot, but it absolutely doesn't do that,” said another. “I often leave blue gear behind, and that thing should have blue everywhere, but it doesn't.”

Flying around sporadically, with no inertia, looking terrible, getting stuck on map geometry, flying out of the arena when you die, and throwing all your loot into hard-to-reach places. The arena is filled with invisible walls for no reason. Did this fight even pass QA? pic.twitter.com/JFUwmWKqJr— Bunbun Jackalope 🐰 (@BunbunJackalope) October 17, 2025
Currently, Borderlands 4 players are trying to help each other by suggesting solutions to problems, although there's no consensus on what will work, and there are no guarantees. Some people recommend saving and quitting once the legend goes out of bounds, then heading straight to the Lost Loot Machine when you reload. Maybe you will be lucky. Maybe not.
This week’s highly anticipated patch – Ones designed to weaken “unexpected interactions”, such as crit knivespostponed to early next week. Some are hoping that this “Day 30 Update” will also fix Borderlands 4's missing legendaries. In the meantime, there's a new mod, On the Borderlands 4 NexusMods pagesome players are having success (of course, this only applies if the game is played on PC). It's called the Ground Loot Assistant and allows you to teleport all your loot to your character. Now, this is a quality of life improvement I can get behind.
Unlike invisible walls.
