Dovetail Games, perhaps best known as the developer and publisher of the Train Sim World series of video games, announced a brand new game at IGN Fan Festival 2025: Fall Edition that is unlike anything they have released before.
Metro Rivals: New York is “an innovative and genre-defying subway simulation game” set to release in early 2026.
In the game, “players step into a near-future New York City, where the subway system is divided into 10 competitive districts.” In addition to the single-player campaign, Metro Rivals: New York also includes a PvP mode where up to four players can compete online or against friends. Drivers can “race to park at designated stations” and are “scored on their ability to precisely control the train under pressure.”
The first trailer for Metro Rivals: New York was released as part of IGN's Fan Fest, and as you can see in the player at the top of the page, it gives us a brief look at the train racing mechanics.
According to Dovetail, the game's narrative sees “players armed with nothing but an old train and the determination to rise up. To succeed, they must take on various missions, earn cash fares, upgrade the train's performance, build a loyal following, and earn respect.”
While there will be in-game purchases, Dovetail said these are “entirely cosmetic” and the game is not “pay-to-win.” Instead, players “can express themselves with a wide range of options to upgrade their train's performance, apply unique skins and uniforms in iconic colors, and personalize their character's appearance to stand out on the track.”
If you don't like either the single-player campaign or the PvP mode, you can also choose to participate in a “more relaxed experience” where “players can set their own path, hop on a train, and enjoy the scenery of the city.”
Metro Rivals: New York marks the first time Dovetail has used Unreal Engine 5 during development. They've also worked with the Reactional Music team to utilize a procedural music engine, which means “even when swapping tracks, the music is completely native and cinematically integrated into the game.”
Metro Rivals: New York is in development for Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and is now open for wishlisting.
