The full history of the Middle Ages is a retail price of $250 in 2020, which is a beautifully designed box set. Each book is heavy, but even the second volume of 2,000 pages, provides a pleasant reading experience. Each book comes with a dust cover that can be stored and displayed in a high-end custom case with JRR Tolkien's iconic logo.
Based on Tolkien’s legend – a large number of backstory, knowledge and notes covering thousands of years of medieval history – the history of the medieval period was originally published in 1983-1996. The author's son and literary executor Christopher Tolkien edited, edited and added to the legendary figures, creating 12 different books.
The full history of the Middle Ages contains all 12 volumes from its original publication year:
- The Lost Story Book, Part 1
- “The Lost Story”, Part 2
- Beleriand's Road
- The shaping of Middle Earth
- Lost paths and other works
- The return of the shadow
- Isengard's Treason
- The war of rings
- Sauron defeated
- Morgos' ring
- Jewelry War
- The Middle-earth people
It's safe to say that these books will be the largest books on most fan shelves, with 5,440 pages out of three books. Each of these three volumes is published separately on the same day as the box set, but at current prices you will spend more on two of them than the box set.
The History of Middle Earth Box Set (2024)

Although the full history of the Middle Ages is the most economical way to read all 12 volumes of physical formats, the 2024 box set is certainly worth a look. These gorgeous sets include splash, fully illustrated dust covers and display cabinets. If you prefer a more traditional look, the other side of the reversible dust cover has an original graphic with a primary color background.
All 12 volumes are included in a single book in four groups, but if you go this route you will also get some extra books. Publisher William Morrow decided to include Silmarillion As the first book in box 1. Tolkien's most famous work Silmarillion Lord of the Rings and Hobbitthese days usually incorporate medieval history – the reason makes sense. The early drafts and parts of the 1977 classic are actually in the 12-volume series. Box Set 1 also includes unfinished stories, while the last set has a book length index.
