This is good news, given that Silent Mountain is still one of the better video game adaptations to date. “Silent Mountain” in 2012: Revelation? not much.

Given that it has been a lot of time since Gans last stepped into the moody town of Silent Hill, you might be wondering how the sequel was connected to its predecessors. Is this a direct continuation of “The Silent Mountain” and “The Silent Mountain: Revelation”? Which game is it adapting to? Here's everything you need to know before heading back to Silent Hill to board the theater.

2006's Silent Hill star Radha Mitchell plays Rose da Silva, a woman whose daughter, Jodelle Ferland, is brought to the remote, abandoned town of Silent Hill to reach the bottom of the salon's regular nightmare. Sean Bean also plays Rose's husband Christopher, who tries to rescue his family even if they are trapped in another aspect.
Despite being another director and writer in MJ Bassett, 2012's Silent Mountain: Apocalypse is a direct sequel to the first film. Adelaide Clemens plays Sharon, now assumes Heather Mason's identity. When her father disappears into the quiet hills, Heather and her classmate Vincent (Kit Harrington) return to town to find him. Revelation also seriously involves religious cults known as the Order of Valtier.
Returning to the Silent Mountain is not a direct follow-up to either of these two films. Instead, the film tells an independent story with different characters on it. Returning to the Silent Mountain Star Jeremy Irvine plays James Sunderland, a wives-in-law who is shocked to receive a letter from his dead wife, Hannah Emily Anderson, urging him to meet in Silent Hill. James will go deeper and deeper into the otherworldly aspects of the town to find her. Silent Hill 2 Remake's Evie Templeton will reprise the role of Laura, a young girl who is also trapped in the Silent Hill network.
In short, it seems like you don't necessarily need to watch other silent hillside movies to enjoy returning to the quiet hills. The sequel follows the game's approach, as the weird town itself rather than the characters provide most connective tissue. Instead of being directly intertwined by plots, most games focus on being drawn to different characters in the town and discovering their personal demons appear as literal monsters. In this regard, the series is no different from Hellraiser, as the Hellraiser film is primarily a standalone horror story, associated with the overall myth of Pinhead and Cenobites.
“The script of a new Silent Hill movie is completely independent of the first two films and respects how Silent Hill evolved.” Gans said in 2022. “The silent mountain is a bit like the Twilight Zone, the fourth dimension, where anything can happen.”
Which games return to Silent Hill to adapt?
If the plot of the return to Silent Hill sounds familiar, it should be. The movie happens to be a direct adaptation of the Silent Hill 2 game, which was originally released in 2001 and was remade in 2024. Like this movie, Silent Hill 2 follows James Sunderland to browse his late wife on all levels of town.
Returning to Silent Mountain looks to be the most faithful game adaptation of the three films so far, that Gans is in trouble with bringing Templeton to Laura again. We assume that the movie will follow the game's core beat, culminating with a horror monster like Pyramid Head with a similarly tragic twisted ending. The Pyramid’s Head himself can be seen in the trailer, which makes him a character that appears in all three movies.
No previous Silent Hill movies can be considered as loose adaptations of the original material. The first “Silent Mountain” movie may be freely borrowed from the series' images and music, as well as some of the basic plots of “Silent Mountain” in 1999, but its plot and roles are largely unique. Silent Hill: Revelation is an adaptation of the Silent Mountain 3 game, turning Rose and Christopher Da Silva into Heather and Harry Mason. But again, the less revelation the better.
Whether directly adapted or not, it seems that the mountain of Silent is a 1:1 copy of Silent Hill 2. Gans hints at the movie Also draw inspiration from PT in 2014a notorious demo of the Silent Hills game designed to enter Hideo Kojima cancelled. Does this mean the film will feature a first-person sequence (Doom of 2005)? Or is PT more influential in terms of stable fear and psychological horror?
